The funds are earmarked for further expansion of its quick commerce infrastructure, including the development of larger warehouses to reduce delivery times.
Zomato, another leading entity in India's food delivery sector, projects a 30% annual growth rate for its meal delivery business over the next five years. Holding a significant market share of 58%, Zomato's gross order value reached ₹322.24 billion in the last fiscal year, fueled by increased demand in major Indian cities. To sustain this growth trajectory, Zomato plans to introduce new restaurant partners and enhance features such as scheduled deliveries and options for discounted canceled orders.
Despite its optimistic outlook, Zomato faces challenges, including high attrition rates among delivery personnel. To address this, the company is implementing additional benefits to attract and retain gig workers, ensuring a stable and efficient delivery network.
Magicpin, a hyperlocal discovery platform backed by Zomato, has made significant strides in the food delivery domain, particularly through its integration with ONDC. In mid-2024, Magicpin invested ₹100 crore to onboard over 100,000 new restaurants and cloud kitchens onto the ONDC platform. This strategic move not only expanded Magicpin's footprint but also provided consumers with a diverse array of dining options at competitive prices.
By November 2024, Magicpin's order volume on ONDC experienced a substantial increase, rising from 10,000 to 150,000 orders. This growth is attributed to competitive pricing strategies and the onboarding of prominent food brands such as Burger King, Domino's, Taco Bell, McDonald's, and Subway.
The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), an initiative by the Government of India, aims to democratize digital commerce by creating a level playing field for sellers and buyers. By facilitating interoperability and standardization, ONDC seeks to reduce the dominance of major platforms and promote inclusivity for small and medium enterprises.
In response to concerns over the monopolistic practices of leading food delivery platforms, the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) has encouraged its members to adopt ONDC. This move is intended to counteract the influence of major players like Swiggy and Zomato, especially regarding their standalone 10-minute delivery services, which have been a point of contention among restaurant owners.
